Shillong, August 13, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation for major infrastructure and public amenity upgrades at Ïewduh, one of the largest and oldest traditional markets in the Northeast, with support from the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Calling Ïewduh the “lifeline of farmers, traders, and local communities,” the Chief Minister noted that the market has long been in need of improvement. The planned upgrades aim to provide shopkeepers with better facilities while creating a cleaner, safer, and more accessible environment for buyers.

The initiative focuses on preserving the traditional character of Ïewduh while equipping it for the future, ensuring that it continues to serve as a vital hub for commerce and community life in Shillong.
Sangma emphasized that the project represents a balance between heritage preservation and modernisation, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting livelihoods and improving public spaces.
