Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan Passes Away at 80

CHENNAI, August 14, 2025: Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan, a veteran political leader and former Member of Parliament, passed away in Chennai on Thursday following a brief period of hospitalization. He was 80.

Ganesan's passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, public representatives and citizens across the country, who remembered him as a dedicated public servant, seasoned administrator and respected statesman.

Born on February 16, 1945, La. Ganesan had a long and distinguished career in public life. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he played an important role in the party's growth and organizational development over several decades. Known for his simplicity, commitment and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, he earned respect across political and social circles.

Before assuming office as the Governor of Nagaland, Ganesan served as the Governor of Manipur from 2021 to 2023. He also held the additional charge of Governor of West Bengal between July and November 2022. On February 20, 2023, he took oath as the Governor of Nagaland and continued to serve the state with dedication and commitment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the demise of Ganesan and paid tribute to his lifelong service to the nation. In his condolence message, the Prime Minister described him as a “devout nationalist” who devoted his life to public service, nation-building and the promotion of Tamil language and culture.

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton also mourned the loss, recalling Ganesan's humility, wisdom and commitment to public welfare. Throughout his tenure as Governor, Ganesan was widely appreciated for his approachable nature and his efforts to promote peace, unity and development. He frequently engaged with community leaders, educational institutions, youth groups and civil society organizations, emphasizing inclusive growth and social harmony.
