Mizoram: Sairang Landowners Warn of Railway Blockade if Compensation Not Paid by August

Aizawl, August 12, 2025: Four landowners from Sairang have warned that they may reclaim their acquired lands and block railway operations if compensation for land acquired for railway expansion is not paid by the end of August. The affected landowners made the announcement during a press interaction held at the Aizawl Press Club on Tuesday.

Sairang Landowners Warn of Railway Blockade if Compensation Not Paid by August

The landowners alleged that although their properties were acquired for the ongoing railway project, compensation payments have either been delayed or remain incomplete. They expressed frustration over what they described as prolonged inaction despite repeated appeals to the concerned authorities.

According to the landowners, information available to them indicates that the compensation amount had already been released by the Indian Railways to the relevant state authorities. However, they claimed that the funds have yet to reach several beneficiaries, leaving them without the compensation they are legally entitled to receive for the land acquired for public infrastructure development.

One of the affected landowners, Pu T. Remlalnghaka, stated that the railway alignment passes directly through his property, significantly affecting his landholding. He claimed that despite all required procedures, including land surveys and spot verifications, having been completed long ago, he has not received any compensation to date.

The landowners said the delay has caused considerable hardship to their families, as they have been unable to utilize the affected land while also being deprived of the financial compensation intended to offset their losses. They stressed that they are not opposed to the railway project and recognise its importance for Mizoram’s development, but argued that affected citizens should receive fair and timely compensation.

During the press conference, the landowners further revealed that apart from the four individuals raising the issue publicly, at least ten other beneficiaries have reportedly not received the full amount due to them. They urged the concerned departments and authorities to expedite the disbursement process and ensure that all pending compensation claims are settled without further delay.

Warning of stronger action if the issue remains unresolved, the landowners stated that they would consider reclaiming their lands and obstructing railway operations if compensation is not paid by the end of August. They appealed to the government and railway authorities to intervene immediately and address the matter before it escalates further.
