SHILLONG, August 16: Football fans in the Northeast are set for a historic clash as Shillong Lajong FC take on defending champions NorthEast United FC in the semifinals of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong, on August 19. The highly anticipated fixture, dubbed the Northeast Derby, promises passion, pride, and packed stands in the region’s footballing capital.
Shillong Lajong, spurred on by their home supporters, sealed their semifinal berth after a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over Indian Navy FT. Trailing at halftime, the Reds rallied through Damaitphang Lyngdoh’s stunning equaliser before Everbrightson Sana converted a late penalty to secure victory and a third Durand Cup semifinal appearance.
NorthEast United, meanwhile, showcased their attacking depth with a commanding 4-0 victory over Bodoland FC in Kokrajhar. Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie led the charge with a brace, while Andy Rodriguez and Parthib Gogoi added their names to the scoresheet in a dominant performance by the Highlanders. Head coach Juan Pedro Benali’s side are now eyeing back-to-back Durand Cup titles.
