New Delhi, Aug 6, 2025: BJP Nagaland State President Benjamin Yepthomi met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to discuss the long-awaited redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station, a key infrastructure project expected to significantly enhance connectivity and economic growth in Nagaland and the wider Northeast region.
During the meeting, Yepthomi emphasized the importance of expediting the modernization of the state's busiest railway station, which serves as the principal rail gateway to Nagaland. The discussions focused on accelerating the implementation of the redevelopment project, improving passenger amenities, strengthening transportation infrastructure and transforming the station into a modern transit hub capable of meeting growing passenger and freight demands.
Dimapur Railway Station occupies a strategic position in the Northeast and is regarded as a crucial link connecting Nagaland with the rest of India. As the state's only major railway station, it plays a vital role in facilitating the movement of people, goods and services. The proposed redevelopment is expected to improve travel experiences, boost commercial activities and support the broader objectives of regional development.
According to Yepthomi, the project aligns closely with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Act East Policy, which seeks to strengthen connectivity, infrastructure and economic integration across the Northeastern states while enhancing links with neighboring countries in Southeast Asia.
“The redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station is not merely an infrastructure project; it is an important step toward improving connectivity, facilitating trade and creating new opportunities for the people of Nagaland,” Yepthomi said following the meeting.
He noted that the Act East Policy has already led to significant investments in roads, railways, airports and other infrastructure projects across the Northeast, helping bridge developmental gaps and promote inclusive growth. The modernization of Dimapur Railway Station, he added, would further strengthen these efforts by providing better transportation facilities and supporting economic expansion.
Officials familiar with the project said the upgraded station is expected to feature improved passenger amenities, enhanced waiting areas, modern platforms, better accessibility, digital services and upgraded safety measures. The redevelopment will also focus on improving operational efficiency and accommodating future growth in passenger traffic.
The project is widely viewed as a catalyst for economic development in Nagaland. Improved railway infrastructure is expected to facilitate trade, encourage tourism and attract investment by providing faster and more efficient connectivity. Local businesses, traders and entrepreneurs are likely to benefit from improved transportation networks, while travelers will gain access to better facilities and services.
The redevelopment is also expected to strengthen regional integration by improving connectivity between Nagaland and neighboring states. As Dimapur serves as a major transportation hub for the region, the upgraded station could play a crucial role in enhancing mobility and supporting broader development initiatives in the Northeast.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reportedly assured that the concerns and proposals raised during the meeting would receive due consideration. The discussions highlighted the Central Government’s continued focus on improving infrastructure in the Northeast and leveraging connectivity projects to drive economic growth.
Political and business observers have welcomed the renewed push for the station’s redevelopment, noting that modern railway infrastructure is essential for unlocking the economic potential of the region. They believe that the project will contribute significantly to Nagaland’s development aspirations while complementing other infrastructure initiatives underway across the Northeast.
Once completed, the redeveloped Dimapur Railway Station is expected to emerge as a modern transportation hub, serving thousands of passengers daily and reinforcing Nagaland’s role in India’s growing connectivity network under the Act East framework.
