Shillong, August 8, 2026: Meghalaya has taken a significant step towards establishing its second official facility in Maharashtra with the handing over of land for Meghalaya House-II at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced.

Sangma said the initiative marks a new chapter in Meghalaya’s engagement with Mumbai and is intended to provide a support system for people from the state travelling to the financial capital for medical treatment, education, employment, business and official purposes.
According to the Chief Minister, the new facility has become necessary due to the growing number of Meghalaya residents travelling to Mumbai and the limited capacity of the existing Meghalaya House-I at Vashi.
Expressing gratitude to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Maharashtra government, Sangma said their support and cooperation had helped make the project possible.
The Chief Minister emphasised that Meghalaya House-II would not merely function as a guest facility. He envisioned it as a platform to showcase Meghalaya and the wider Northeast to people in western India.
The facility, he said, could serve as a window to Meghalaya’s music, cuisine, handicrafts, tourism, entrepreneurship and the diverse cultures of its tribal communities.
Sangma also highlighted the potential of the project to strengthen people-to-people ties and create greater opportunities for cultural and economic cooperation between Meghalaya and Maharashtra.

The establishment of Meghalaya House-II is expected to complement the services provided by the existing Vashi facility while expanding Meghalaya’s institutional presence in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
The project comes as Meghalaya seeks to strengthen its connectivity and engagement with major urban and economic centres outside the Northeast. Besides providing accommodation and support to citizens, the new facility could also serve as a platform for promoting the state’s products, tourism and cultural identity.
Sangma said Meghalaya looks forward to building stronger people-to-people, cultural and economic connections between the two states through the new facility.
