Aizawl/Guwahati, August 5: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the people of Assam affected by the recent devastating floods while encouraging students to pursue academic excellence and contribute to nation-building during the Student Induction Programme – Deeksharamb at Assam Royal Global University (RGU) in Guwahati.

Addressing newly admitted students as the Chief Guest, the Chief Minister began his speech by conveying Mizoram's heartfelt sympathy to the people of Assam, particularly those who lost their lives, remain missing, or have been displaced by the floods.
He said the people of Mizoram stand with the flood-affected families during this difficult time and prayed for the speedy recovery and rehabilitation of the affected communities.
Highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two neighbouring states, Lalduhoma said that although Mizoram and Assam are separate states, they share deep historical, cultural and economic ties. He noted that both states depend on one another in many ways and continue to work towards shared developmental goals.
The Chief Minister pointed out that a large number of Assamese reside peacefully in Mizoram, while many Mizos pursue higher education, employment and business opportunities in Assam. He said strengthening mutual trust and cooperation between the two states remains essential for the progress and prosperity of the region.
Recalling his participation in the Rongali Bihu celebration organised by the Assam Culture Society of Mizoram in May 2024, Lalduhoma said he had then expressed his hope that the Assamese community would continue to live peacefully in Mizoram. He added that both he and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have consistently maintained that cordial relations and close cooperation between the two neighbouring states should remain a priority.
Turning to the students, Lalduhoma congratulated the freshers on beginning a new chapter in their academic journey and expressed confidence that they would successfully complete their university education. He especially encouraged students from Mizoram to preserve the rich cultural values and traditions of the Zo community while striving for academic and professional excellence.
Describing a university as more than just a place of learning, he said higher educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping responsible citizens by exposing students to diverse cultures, ideas and perspectives. He encouraged students to develop mutual respect, broaden their outlook and acquire the knowledge and skills needed to serve society.
The Chief Minister observed that India's greatest strength lies in its youthful population, describing young people as the nation's "powerhouse." He urged students to embrace innovation, continuously upgrade their skills, and prepare themselves to contribute to the country's development.
Lalduhoma also praised Assam Royal Global University for promoting inclusivity and cultural diversity. He noted that the university's forthcoming convocation would be themed "Mizoram," describing it as a reflection of the institution's appreciation for the state's people and culture.

He expressed hope that the university would continue to grow as a centre of academic excellence and remain a source of knowledge and inspiration for students from Northeast India and beyond.
Established in 2017, Assam Royal Global University offers more than 130 academic programmes, has around 500 faculty members, and a student strength of over 9,000, including more than 400 international students from 28 countries.
The 19-day Student Induction Programme – Deeksharamb has been designed to help newly admitted students adapt to university life, build friendships and familiarise themselves with the academic environment.
During his visit, the Chief Minister also toured the university campus and interacted with students from Mizoram studying at the institution, encouraging them to work hard and make the state proud through their achievements.
