Guwahati, August 5: Assam paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on the occasion of Lok Kalyan Diwas on Wednsday, with the State Government recognising exemplary public servants through the Lok Sewa Awards and Karmashree Awards 2026.

The commemorative programme was attended by School Education and Higher Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu as the Chief Guest, while Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and senior government officials also participated in the ceremony.
Observed every year on August 5, Lok Kalyan Diwas commemorates the birth anniversary and enduring legacy of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam's first Chief Minister, whose contributions to public service, institution-building and the development of the state continue to inspire generations of administrators and citizens.
Paying homage to Bordoloi, the dignitaries highlighted his vision, integrity and commitment to the welfare of the people, describing his legacy as a guiding force for good governance and responsible public administration.
During the programme, the government presented the Lok Sewa Awards 2026, instituted in 2022, to recognise the outstanding dedication and commitment of non-gazetted government employees who have made significant contributions to improving public service delivery across Assam.
This year, 10 state-level awardees and 41 district-level awardees were honoured for their exemplary service, dedication and professionalism in serving the public.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Karmashree Awards 2026, Assam's highest recognition for excellence in public administration. Instituted in 2017, the awards honour innovative government initiatives that have strengthened governance, improved service delivery and enhanced citizen welfare.

Over the years, the Karmashree Awards have recognised several transformative initiatives, including Mission Basundhara, the Jaldoot Programme, the SAMARTH Admission Portal, the successful UNESCO World Heritage inscription of the Charaideo Maidams, the Assam Pearl Farming Initiative, the rehabilitation of Laika Forest Village, and the Anaemia-Mukt Hailakandi initiative.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to uphold the values of integrity, professionalism, accountability and dedication in public administration. Speakers emphasised that efficient, transparent and citizen-centric governance remains central to Assam's development agenda, while recognising the efforts of government employees whose work continues to strengthen public institutions and improve the lives of people across the state.
