Namsai, July 25: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Saturday chaired a preliminary meeting in Namsai to initiate the integration of Buddhist sites in eastern Arunachal Pradesh into the Northeast Buddhist Circuit, a major tourism initiative announced in the Union Budget 2026–27.

The meeting brought together key government officials and tourism stakeholders to discuss a roadmap for developing the region into a globally recognized Buddhist tourism destination. Among those present were Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng, who is also a member of the National Tourism Advisory Council and Chairman of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) Northeast Chapter, Tourism Secretary Pagli Sora, Namsai Deputy Commissioner C.R. Khampa, officials from the Department of Tourism, and other stakeholders.
During the meeting, participants discussed the inclusion of several Buddhist-inhabited areas in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, including Bordumsa, Miao, Jairampur, Vijaynagar, Namsai, Chongkham, Kaho, Tuting, Pemako, and Mechukha, into the proposed Buddhist Circuit.
Chowna Mein said these destinations possess immense spiritual, cultural, and historical significance and have the potential to emerge as premier Buddhist tourism hubs. He stressed the need to improve road connectivity, tourism infrastructure, accommodation facilities, and visitor experiences while ensuring the preservation of the region's rich Buddhist heritage and traditions.
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative would be implemented through close collaboration between government departments, tourism stakeholders, and local communities. He said the project aims not only to promote religious and cultural tourism but also to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local residents.
According to Mein, the development of the Buddhist Circuit is expected to generate employment, encourage entrepreneurship, boost local businesses, and contribute to inclusive economic growth across eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the wider Northeast region.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen Arunachal Pradesh's position on India's tourism map by attracting domestic and international pilgrims and tourists, while showcasing the state's unique Buddhist heritage, scenic landscapes, and vibrant cultural traditions.
