Delhi Police registered an FIR after two women from Assam and Nagaland were allegedly molested and assaulted in Nehru Place.

According to police, the incident took place around 6:30 am on May 10 near a roadside tea stall outside a club. The women alleged that two men initially began catcalling them, after which several others joined in and the situation escalated into a violent confrontation.

One of the victims alleged that her friend was slapped, surrounded and physically assaulted by multiple men, while her clothes were torn during the incident. The women also claimed that racial slurs and abusive remarks were directed at them and that one of the accused attacked them with a bamboo stick while they attempted to flee.

The complainants further alleged that the accused blocked their path, threatened them against speaking about the incident and later continued intimidating them through social media. They also claimed that bystanders recorded videos of the assault instead of intervening to help.

A PCR call was reportedly received at Kalkaji Police Station following the incident. Delhi Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to molestation, assault, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and acts endangering life.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari confirmed that the identities of the accused have been established and stated that arrests are expected soon.

Social activist Dr. Ghritashri Bhuyan Narula, who assisted the victims, criticised the police response and alleged serious lapses in handling the case. She claimed the women were initially not provided a copy of the FIR and had to be escorted home late at night due to safety concerns.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of women from Northeast India in the national capital, especially following a similar assault case reported earlier in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area.
