Raising
the issue during his maiden speech in the Assam Legislative Assembly, the newly
elected Rongkhang MLA described the demand as a historic and emotional aspiration
deeply connected to the identity, constitutional rights and future of the
indigenous people inhabiting the two hill districts.
Dr.
Tuliram Ronghang stated that the movement for implementation of Article 244(A)
has remained unresolved for more than four decades despite repeated demands by
various regional organisations, student bodies, community leaders and civil
society groups.
According
to him, the demand goes beyond politics and represents the collective hopes of
the people for greater self-governance, constitutional protection and
preservation of their unique cultural and social identity.
Speaking
during the Assembly proceedings, the MLA asserted that he would continue to
raise the issue at every possible platform to ensure that the voices and aspirations
of the hill people are heard at the highest level.
“With
sincerity and determination, I will continue to ensure that the voices of our
people are heard at the highest level,” he said.
The
demand for an Autonomous State under Article 244(A) has long been one of the
most significant political movements in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
Supporters of the movement argue that greater constitutional autonomy is
necessary to ensure balanced development, administrative empowerment and
stronger safeguards for the indigenous communities of the hill districts.
Political
observers said Dr. Ronghang’s speech has reignited discussions surrounding the
Autonomous State demand across the two districts, with many residents viewing
it as a renewed political push towards achieving long-standing constitutional
aspirations.

The MLA’s
remarks also drew attention on social media and among regional organisations
that have consistently campaigned for implementation of Article 244(A).
Concluding
his address, Dr. Ronghang reiterated his commitment to the movement and echoed
the popular slogan associated with the demand: “No Autonomous State, No Rest.”
“The journey continues. Together, we will continue to strive for the rights and future our people deserve,” he added.
