Gangtok,May 7: The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) has been conferred the prestigious Subhas Chandra Bose Disaster Management Award 2026, one of India's highest honours in the field of disaster management. The award recognises the Authority's outstanding contribution and distinguished service in strengthening disaster preparedness, mitigation, emergency response, and resilience across the Himalayan state.

The achievement was warmly welcomed by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, who congratulated the SSDMA and described the honour as a testament to the unwavering commitment, professionalism, and tireless efforts of its officers, staff members, volunteers, and partner organisations.
In a message following the announcement, the Chief Minister said the award is a matter of immense pride not only for the Authority but for the entire people of Sikkim. He noted that the recognition reflects the state's sustained efforts to build a robust disaster management system capable of responding effectively to natural disasters and emergencies, particularly in the geographically sensitive Himalayan region.
Tamang praised the SSDMA for its proactive approach towards disaster risk reduction through community awareness programmes, capacity building, preparedness planning, early warning mechanisms, and coordinated emergency response. He also acknowledged the invaluable contribution of officials, field personnel, volunteers, and various stakeholders who have worked together to safeguard lives, protect property, and strengthen community resilience across the state.

The Subhas Chandra Bose Disaster Management Award, instituted by the Government of India, is presented annually to recognise excellence in disaster management by institutions and individuals who have made exceptional contributions in the areas of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, relief, rehabilitation, research, and capacity building.
Officials said the honour reinforces Sikkim's reputation as a state committed to effective disaster governance and public safety. The award is expected to further strengthen ongoing efforts to develop resilient communities, improve emergency management systems, and promote a culture of preparedness throughout the state, ensuring better protection for people and infrastructure against future disasters.
