With the conferment of the honour, Sikkim became the 15th state in the country and the third state from the Northeast to receive the President’s Police Colour, also known as the “Nishaan” - the highest ceremonial honour awarded to a police force in India.

The ceremony was attended by Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), senior police officials, government representatives, and members of the public.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu praised the Sikkim Police for its dedication, discipline, and contribution towards maintaining law and order in the Himalayan state. She urged the police force to become more citizen-centric and sensitive while dealing with the public, particularly women, children, and economically weaker sections.

The President also stressed the growing challenges posed by cybercrime, online fraud, and deepfake technology, urging the police force to remain technologically prepared and adopt modern tools to combat emerging threats.

She further appreciated the role played by the Sikkim Police in disaster response and mitigation efforts, noting the force’s contribution during emergencies and natural calamities in the mountainous state.

“The police should be more sensitive while dealing with citizens and remain ready to face new-age challenges such as cybercrime and online fraud,” President Murmu said during her address.

The President’s Police Colour is awarded in recognition of a police force’s exceptional service record, unwavering discipline, courage, and dedication to the nation. The honour is considered one of the most prestigious recognitions for police organisations in the country.
