According to officials, the accused, identified as Jeremy Lalthangtura, was produced before the court on Monday after completing an initial 72-hour police remand. Following a request from investigating officers, the court granted an additional 72 hours of police custody to facilitate further investigation into the case, which has emerged as one of the most serious prison-related security breaches reported in Mizoram in recent years.
Authorities said another individual linked to the case, Laltlanhlua, a motor driver attached to the district jail, has also been placed under 72-hour police custody. Investigators suspect that he may have had a role in events surrounding the release of inmates and are examining his involvement as part of the ongoing probe.
Police sources stated that the extended remand period is necessary to verify statements already provided by the accused and to establish the sequence of events that led to the use of forged documents for securing the release of prisoners. Investigators are also attempting to identify other individuals who may have been involved in preparing, distributing, or facilitating the use of the fake court orders.
The case came to light after authorities discovered discrepancies in documents used to authorize the release of inmates from the Lunglei District Jail. Subsequent verification reportedly revealed that the release orders were suspected to be forged and had not been issued through proper judicial channels.
Following the discovery, the District and Sessions Judge, Lunglei, lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) at the Lunglei Police Station on April 27, triggering a detailed criminal investigation. Since then, law enforcement agencies have been working to uncover the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.
Investigators are currently examining a range of evidence, including official records, digital communications, and financial transactions. Police sources revealed that special attention is being given to bank accounts allegedly used by the accused. Authorities are tracing the movement of funds to determine whether money was exchanged in connection with the fraudulent release of inmates and to identify any additional beneficiaries or accomplices.
The investigation has also involved extensive questioning of jail officials and inmates. Statements are being recorded from prison staff, released inmates who have since been rearrested, and other individuals who may possess relevant information. Officials said these testimonies are expected to help investigators piece together how the forged documents were prepared, presented, and accepted.
Forensic examination of documents and verification of records are also underway. Investigators are seeking to determine whether the forged court orders were created using sophisticated methods designed to imitate genuine judicial documents. The possibility of insider involvement has not been ruled out.

Authorities have reiterated that the investigation remains active and that additional arrests could be made as new evidence emerges. Officials emphasized that all individuals found responsible for the forgery, misuse of official procedures, or facilitation of the illegal release of inmates will face legal action.
The case has raised concerns regarding document verification procedures and prison administration protocols, prompting calls for stronger safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police officials said the investigation is progressing rapidly and assured the public that every aspect of the case will be thoroughly examined to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of the judicial and correctional systems.
