The accused, identified as Jeremy Lalthangtura, was produced before the court after completing an initial 72-hour police remand. The court granted an additional 72 hours of custody to enable further investigation. Another individual, Laltlanhlua, a jail motor driver allegedly linked to the case, has also been placed under 72-hour police custody.
Police sources said the extended remand was sought to verify statements made by the accused and to examine the circumstances surrounding the use of a forged court order that led to the release of 16 inmates from the district jail. Investigators are also probing financial transactions, including the use of a bank account allegedly facilitated by the accused, to trace money flow and possible accomplices.

The case came to light after authorities discovered that the release of inmates had been carried out based on documents later suspected to be fake. Following this, the District & Sessions Judge, Lunglei, filed an FIR at Lunglei Police Station on April 27, prompting a detailed investigation.
Police said statements of jail officials and inmates are being recorded, while further verification of documents and financial records is underway. Authorities indicated that more arrests or developments may follow as the probe continues.
