The decision came after a delegation of teachers appealed to the government, citing difficulties in preparing for the examination due to multiple official responsibilities, including Census and SIR duties.

Speaking at a public programme in Damas, North Garo Hills, Sangma said many teachers are currently balancing classroom responsibilities alongside mandatory national assignments, leaving them worried and under pressure ahead of the examination.

“The teachers are worried and in a dilemma, given their multiple concurrent assignments,” the Chief Minister said while announcing the postponement.

He assured teachers that the government would review the overall situation and announce a suitable date later to ensure adequate preparation time for candidates.

“Teachers need not worry. We will evaluate the overall situation and reschedule a proper, suitable date,” Sangma said.

During his address, the Chief Minister also spoke about the broader state of education in Meghalaya and acknowledged that while the government has made significant investments in expanding educational infrastructure and increasing the number of schools, challenges remain in improving quality.

“In terms of quantity, we have enough schools, but we are lagging behind in quality,” he remarked.

Sangma said the government remains committed to improving educational standards in the state but stressed that meaningful transformation would require cooperation from teachers, parents and all stakeholders.

He also praised teachers for their dedication and resilience in continuing to serve students despite various systemic challenges and additional administrative duties.
