Himanta Biswa Sarma Elected NDA Legislature Party Leader, Set to Return as Assam Chief Minister

Guwahati, May 10: Himanta Biswa Sarma was on Sunday elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Assam, paving the way for him to return as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term.

The announcement was made by BJP national president and Union Minister J. P. Nadda following a meeting of NDA legislators in the state.

Sarma is scheduled to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 12. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the swearing-in ceremony as the chief guest.

Addressing the media after his election as NDA Legislature Party leader, Sarma thanked the people of Assam and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the mandate and support.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has blessed us to form the government in Assam for a third consecutive term. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister. The people have blessed us, and we will carry out development work over the next five years,” Sarma said.

He also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president J P Nadda and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia for their support and leadership.

Sarma said the NDA Council of Ministers would take oath on May 12 in the presence of the Prime Minister and appealed to the people of Assam to continue blessing the government in the future.

“We aim to take Assam forward and make it one of the most developed states in the country,” he said.

Following his election, Sarma met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan to formally stake claim to form the next government.

The meeting was also attended by Union Minister J P Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

The BJP-led NDA secured victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, enabling the alliance to form the government in the state for a third consecutive term.
