Assam Orders Foolproof Security, Continuous Surveillance of Strong Rooms

Guwahati, May 1, 2026: Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota chaired a comprehensive video conference on Friday to review preparations for vote counting, directing officials to ensure foolproof security and continuous surveillance of strong rooms across the state.

The meeting was held jointly with the Director General of Police, the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), and other senior officials, and was attended by District Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police, and Commanding Officers of battalions.

During the review, the Chief Secretary emphasised that the guidelines of the Election Commission of India must be followed strictly, instructing all districts to maintain round-the-clock vigil over strong rooms and ensure strict compliance with counting procedures.

Officials were directed to conduct mandatory inspections of strong rooms and counting centres, deploy adequate police and paramilitary forces, and ensure timely arrival of security personnel for counting day duties.

The meeting also focused on maintaining law and order after the counting process. Authorities were instructed to enforce a dry day on counting day, regulate or restrict victory processions, and put in place robust measures to prevent any post-poll violence.

The Chief Secretary also asked officials to closely monitor pending electoral offence cases and related court matters.

Reiterating a zero-tolerance approach to lapses, Kota instructed officers to ensure peaceful, transparent, and incident-free counting while maintaining a stable law and order situation across Assam in the post-poll period.
