AASU president Utpal Sarma said prices of essential goods are “burning high” and alleged that efforts to control inflation have so far failed, placing increasing financial pressure on the common people.

In a message shared on social media, Sarma warned that the organisation would take to the streets if the situation did not improve and said protests had now become unavoidable.

The student body stated that demonstrations would be held across Assam demanding immediate government intervention to reduce the prices of food items and daily essentials and provide relief to the public.

According to AASU, the prices of several household commodities have witnessed a sharp rise in recent weeks across markets in the state. These include rice, pulses, edible oils, sugar, vegetables, fruits and dry fruits.

The organisation also highlighted that increasing fuel prices have further added to the burden on consumers by pushing up transportation and market costs, resulting in higher prices of essential goods.

AASU said the continued rise in living costs is severely affecting ordinary families, students and low-income groups who are struggling to manage daily expenses amid inflationary pressure.

The organisation maintained that despite growing public concern, effective measures to control rising prices have not been visible, prompting the decision to organise statewide protests.

The protests scheduled for May 22 are expected to take place in different districts of Assam with participation from AASU units and members across the state.

The announcement comes amid wider public concern over inflation and the increasing cost of living, especially following recent hikes in fuel prices linked to developments in West Asia and global market conditions.
