Arunachal Pradesh Mourns Demise of Indigenous Leader Dr. Bengia Tolum

Itanagar, May 14, 2026: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein have expressed profound grief over the passing of renowned indigenous leader, social reformer, and cultural advocate Dr. Bengia Tolum, describing his demise as a great loss to the state and its indigenous communities.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Chief Minister Khandu paid tribute to Dr. Tolum, calling him a “towering social reformer, cultural architect, and one of the most influential indigenous leaders of Arunachal Pradesh.” He said Dr. Tolum dedicated his entire life to public service and worked tirelessly to strengthen indigenous identity, preserve traditional values, and promote harmony among the diverse communities of the state.

Khandu highlighted Dr. Tolum’s long and distinguished leadership journey, particularly his role as a former president of the Nyishi Elite Society and the serving president of the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum (AITF). Under his leadership, several important initiatives were undertaken to safeguard indigenous rights, promote cultural preservation, and foster peace and understanding among different tribal communities.

The Chief Minister noted that Dr. Tolum played a pivotal role in various historic social movements aimed at strengthening inter-tribal unity and preserving Arunachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage. His contributions extended beyond cultural advocacy to education, language promotion, and community development, making him one of the most respected voices in the state.

Recognizing his immense contributions, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh had conferred upon him an honorary doctorate in 2022 in recognition of his efforts towards socio-cultural integration and public service.

“He will be remembered for his invaluable contributions to language, culture, education, and community integration. Arunachal Pradesh has lost a visionary leader and a true guardian of indigenous identity,” Khandu said.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also expressed deep sorrow over Dr. Tolum’s passing. He described him as a dedicated leader who worked relentlessly for the welfare, rights, and dignity of indigenous communities. Mein said Dr. Tolum’s leadership through the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum helped strengthen awareness about indigenous issues and contributed significantly to social progress in the state.

Both leaders extended their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, and countless admirers of Dr. Tolum. They prayed for strength and comfort for the family during this difficult time and for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
