The case was filed following a complaint by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam. Khera had moved the apex court after the Gauhati High Court earlier declined to grant him anticipatory bail.

During the hearing, Khera argued that there was no justification for his arrest and urged the court not to “humiliate” him through custodial action. His counsel, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, criticised remarks allegedly made by the Assam Chief Minister, describing them as influencing the environment around the case and creating a sense of bias.

The case stems from allegations made by Khera regarding the financial dealings of Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. The Assam Chief Minister has strongly denied the claims, describing them as politically motivated and initiating legal proceedings against the Congress leader.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Supreme Court reserved its judgment on the anticipatory bail plea. The court’s final decision is expected in the coming days.
