Sikkim Glamour World Apologises to Lepcha Community Over Miss India Outfit Controversy
Miss India Sikkim contestant Deekila Sherpa walks the ramp in an outfit inspired by Lepcha traditional fabric during the 61st Femina Miss India pageant, sparking controversy online.

The controversy began after Deekila Sherpa appeared in an outfit inspired by the Lepcha traditional dress, thokro, while representing Sikkim at the 61st edition of the pageant. Members of the Lepcha community and several social media users raised objections, stating that the attire did not accurately represent the cultural and traditional significance of the community’s dress.

In an apology letter dated April 20, David Rai expressed “deepest and most humble apologies” to the Lepcha community for any hurt caused by the outfit designed using Lepcha fabric for the national platform.

The organisation acknowledged that although the intention was to showcase the beauty of Lepcha fabric on a national and international stage, the effort may not have aligned with the cultural and traditional importance attached to the attire.

The letter also noted that the outfit was part of a collaboration involving the Ministry of Textiles and the Femina Miss India platform aimed at promoting traditional textiles.

Sikkim Glamour World stated that it respects the traditions, identity and emotions of the Lepcha community and sincerely sought forgiveness if the representation caused discomfort or disappointment. The organisation further assured that it would be more mindful and respectful in future cultural representations.
