New Delhi, April 8: Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss concerns surrounding the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

The meeting was attended by Dy CM Prestone Tynsong along with a delegation from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, including His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Poola, President CBCI and Rev. Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, Secretary General CBCI and others.

During the discussion, the delegation raised concerns about the potential impact of the proposed amendments on institutions engaged in education, healthcare, and social services across Meghalaya and the Northeast, particularly in remote and tribal regions.

Sangma emphasized the critical role played by these organizations in delivering essential services to underserved communities. He stressed the need for safeguards to ensure the continuity of such services while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The Chief Minister expressed appreciation to Rijiju for giving the delegation a patient hearing. The Union Minister assured that wider consultations with stakeholders would be undertaken before finalising any amendments to the law.

Sangma reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to constructive engagement to protect the interests of the people of Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.
