In a notification issued on April 13, the union stated that the day will be observed in honour of Late Chumdamo Tungoe of Phiro village and Late Thungkhomo Ezung of Longsa village, who were killed in a police firing incident on April 14, 1977.

According to the notification, the tragic incident occurred during a peaceful procession organised by the Lotha Students’ Union to protest against the alleged inhumane treatment meted out to then SDO (Civil) Ngurkhuma Mizo by the Assam Police and Forest Guard.

The union stated that the sacrifices of the two martyrs serve as a powerful reminder of the commitment of their forebears to the values of freedom, justice, and equality. Their sacrifice continues to inspire generations of Lotha students and community members to strive for a more just and equitable society.

As part of the observance, the Lotha Students’ Union has directed all educational institutions in the district to hold a silent prayer in honour of the martyrs as a mark of respect.

The notification was issued by LSU President S. Zubenthung Ngullie and General Secretary Nyanthung M. Khuyung.
