In an official notification issued on April 13, the union stated that the observance is dedicated to the memory of Late Chumdamo Tungoe of Phiro village and Late Thungkhomo Ezung of Longsa village, who were killed on April 14, 1977. The LSU described the two individuals as martyrs whose sacrifices continue to hold deep significance for the Lotha community and future generations.

According to the union, the tragic incident occurred when members of the Lotha community, led by the LSU, organised a peaceful procession to protest against the alleged inhumane treatment meted out to then Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Ngurkhuma Mizo, by personnel of the Assam Police and Forest Guard. The demonstration, intended as a peaceful expression of public concern, turned tragic when police opened fire, resulting in the deaths of the two protesters.

Recalling the events of April 14, 1977, the LSU said the sacrifices made by the two martyrs symbolise the courage and determination of the Lotha people in standing up for justice, dignity and democratic rights. The union noted that their legacy continues to inspire students and citizens alike to uphold the principles of freedom, equality and social justice.

As part of the Black Day observance, the LSU has directed all schools and educational institutions in Wokha district to conduct a silent prayer in honour of the departed martyrs. The prayer ceremony is intended to pay tribute to their sacrifices and encourage younger generations to reflect on the historical significance of the day.

The union further urged students, teachers and the public to remember the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for the welfare and rights of the community. It emphasised that preserving such historical memories is essential for fostering unity, awareness and a sense of responsibility among future generations.

The notification announcing the observance was jointly issued by LSU President S. Zubenthung Ngullie and General Secretary Nyanthung M. Khuyung. The union called upon all educational institutions and community members to participate in the observance with solemnity and respect.
