Kuki CSOs Welcome Security Action, Flag ‘Supersonic Ammunition’ Used by Tangkhul Militants

Ukhrul, April 12: The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, has welcomed the recent decision to authorize security forces to respond to gunfire in the region, while raising concerns over the alleged use of “supersonic ammunition” by Tangkhul militants.

In a statement issued on April 11, the committee described the security response as “better late than never,” noting that the move could help restore safety and curb violence in affected areas. However, the group also pointed out that the decision came after tragic incidents, including the deaths of two civilians at Thawai Kuki, injuries to three residents of Mongkot Chepu, and the death of BSF Constable Mithun Mandal (170/A BSF).

According to the statement, the authorization for security forces to respond to gunfire has brought a sense of relief to civilians and security personnel in Mongkot Chepu, Shangkai, Zalenbung, and the Leplen–Tingpibung stretch, which have witnessed tensions in recent days.

The committee, however, expressed serious concern over what it described as the use of supersonic ammunition by Tangkhul militants, stating that such ammunition can produce deceptive acoustic effects. This, it said, may lead to confusion about the true origin of gunfire and could risk misidentifying the perpetrators, including wrongly implicating members of the Kuki community.

The organisation stressed that authorities must carefully verify the origin of any gunfire before taking action to prevent misunderstandings and avoid further escalation of tensions.

Calling for calm and responsible action, the committee urged all stakeholders to allow truth and reason to guide decisions, adding that sanity should prevail over hatred and propaganda.

The statement was issued by the Department of Information and Media of the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul.
