Announcing the development, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu congratulated the college, stating that the recognition reflects the institution’s consistent commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and quality education.
Welcoming the decision, Principal Professor Bipul Das said the autonomous status would open new opportunities for academic and institutional growth. He expressed confidence that the college would further strengthen its academic and social contributions in the coming years.
Das also highlighted the challenge of staff shortages in several colleges across Assam and requested additional support from the state government to improve infrastructure, as student enrolment continues to grow.
Established on September 10, 1962, the college is affiliated with Gauhati University and is one of Assam’s premier institutions for commerce education. Over the years, it has expanded from an initial intake of about 300 students to more than 3,000 today.
The autonomous status will allow the college greater academic flexibility, including the ability to design its own curriculum, introduce innovative courses, and adopt evaluation systems suited to evolving educational needs, while remaining affiliated with Gauhati University.
