Champhai, April 8: A new chapter in adventure tourism in Mizoram began on Tuesday with the inauguration of a dedicated paragliding take-off site at Eco Cultural Park, Tlangsam, in Champhai district. The facility was officially inaugurated by Prof. Lalnilawma, Minister of State for Rural Development, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R), and other portfolios.

The paragliding take-off point has been developed by the Champhai District Aerosports Association with the aim of promoting adventure sports and attracting more visitors to the district. The initiative is expected to enhance Champhai’s reputation as a tourism destination while creating new opportunities for outdoor recreation and local economic growth.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Lalnilawma commended the members of the association for their commitment, teamwork, and dedication in successfully establishing the facility. He noted that the project was achieved through collective effort and cooperation, without individuals competing for recognition or credit, which he described as a commendable example of community spirit.
The minister highlighted that paragliding is more than just an adventure sport. According to him, the activity promotes physical fitness, mental well-being, and recreation while also providing opportunities for tourism development. He expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated site would emerge as a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists visiting Champhai district.
Prof. Lalnilawma further stated that he would raise the matter with the state’s Tourism Minister to explore additional support and development opportunities for the facility. He stressed the importance of investing in adventure tourism as part of broader efforts to diversify Mizoram’s tourism sector and attract a wider range of visitors.
Following his address, the minister formally inaugurated the paragliding take-off site and announced a financial contribution of ₹10,000 to the Champhai District Aerosports Association to support its future activities and development initiatives.
The event was also addressed by Champhai Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aaquib, who highlighted the tourism potential of the district and the importance of creating new attractions that can benefit local communities. J. Vanlalliana, President of the Mizoram Aerosports Association, also spoke on the significance of promoting aerosports in the state and encouraging youth participation in adventure activities.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Paul Zakhuma, while prayers were offered by Rev. Lalhmingthanga Chhangte, Bethel Pastor. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks and closing prayer delivered by Pro Pastor Lallawmsanga.
Local residents, tourism enthusiasts, government officials, and members of the aerosports community attended the event. Demonstration flights and discussions on the future of paragliding in Mizoram added to the excitement surrounding the inauguration.
Officials expressed optimism that the new facility would help position Champhai as a leading destination for adventure tourism in Northeast India. With its scenic landscapes, favourable weather conditions, and growing tourism infrastructure, the district is increasingly being recognised as an ideal location for activities such as paragliding, trekking, and eco-tourism.
The inauguration marks an important step toward expanding adventure tourism opportunities in Mizoram while promoting sustainable tourism and creating new avenues for community-based economic development.
