Speaking to reporters during a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Shillong, Antony said the party has witnessed significant growth in the region over the past few years.

“In 2028, you can expect the BJP to be a much bigger political player in the state of Meghalaya also,” he said.

Highlighting the party’s progress in the Northeast, Antony noted that the BJP once had no representation in the region but now has a strong presence across most states.

“Many years back in the Northeast, the party did not have a single seat. Now seven of the eight states are governed by the NDA, including Meghalaya,” he said.

He added that the BJP is currently the largest party in four states - Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Tripura - and continues to strengthen its political base in other northeastern states.

“Like in any other state, the party is aspiring to become number one in Meghalaya also,” Antony added.

During the press conference, Antony also criticised the Indian National Congress and the INDIA alliance, accusing them of repeatedly obstructing the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

He alleged that opposition parties had historically blocked or delayed the legislation despite claiming to support women’s empowerment. Antony said the BJP, under Narendra Modi, remains committed to ensuring greater representation for women in politics.

Antony further stated that the issue reflects a broader difference between what he described as “political posturing” by opposition parties and the BJP’s commitment to delivering policies aimed at empowering women.
