New Delhi, April 12: Assam's lawn bowls players delivered an outstanding performance at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championships 2026, helping India emerge as the overall champion of the continental tournament held in New Delhi from April 5 to 11. Leading the state's medal haul were Putul Sonowal and Nayan Moni Saikia, who clinched gold medals in the men's and women's singles events respectively.
India finished at the top of the medal table with an impressive tally of four gold, one silver, and four bronze medals. Assam made a remarkable contribution to the national team's success, with all six members of the state's contingent returning home with medals.
Putul Sonowal displayed exceptional skill and consistency throughout the tournament to capture the men's singles title, while Nayan Moni Saikia dominated the women's singles competition to secure another gold for India. Their victories further strengthened Assam's growing reputation as one of the country's leading centres for lawn bowls.
Assam's success extended beyond the singles events. Jayanta Sarmah added another gold medal after helping India win the men's fours title alongside teammates Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, and Dinesh Kumar. The quartet produced a commanding performance to finish atop the podium.
In the women's fours competition, Bangita Hazarika earned a silver medal along with teammates Reshma Kumari, Pinki, and Rupa Rani Tirkey, contributing to India's overall medal tally with another podium finish.
The state also celebrated two bronze medals. Putul Sonowal teamed up with Jayanta Sarmah to secure bronze in the men's triples event, while Bitu Das and Suranjana Baruah claimed bronze in the Under-25 singles category after impressive performances against some of Asia's best young players.
