Assam Athletes Shine on Day One of South Asian Ju-Jutsu Championship 2026

Digana, Sri Lanka, April 12: Assam athletes made India proud with an impressive medal haul on the opening day of the South Asian Ju-Jutsu Championship 2026, winning two gold and three bronze medals in different categories.

Himangshu Saikia secured a gold medal in the Fighting category, while Aryan Sarmah clinched gold in the Newaza (ground fighting) event, giving India a strong start in the regional tournament.

India’s medal tally was further boosted by three bronze medals won by Assam players. Rupsajir Ronghanpi and Atreyee Kashyap claimed bronze medals in the Newaza category, while Luiti Baruah finished with a bronze in the Fighting category.

The achievements marked a proud moment for both Assam and India, as the athletes showcased strong performances against competitors from across South Asia.

The South Asian Ju-Jutsu Championship 2026 is being held from April 10 to 12 at the Digana Sports Complex in Sri Lanka, featuring athletes from several South Asian countries competing in disciplines such as Fighting, Newaza, Duo and Show Ju-Jutsu across different age groups including U-16, U-21 and adult categories. 

Ju-jutsu, a martial art that focuses on grappling, submissions and self-defence techniques, has grown significantly in popularity across Asia and has been included in major international competitions such as the Asian Games since 2018.
