Tripura State Games 2026 Kicks Off with Grand Ceremony in Agartala

Agartala, February 22, 2026: Tripura entered a new chapter in its sporting history on Sunday with the grand inauguration of the first-ever Tripura State Games 2026 at the Dasharath Deb State Sports Complex in Badharghat. The landmark event, organised by the Tripura Olympic Association, has brought together thousands of athletes from across the state in what is being hailed as a major step towards strengthening sports development and nurturing future champions.

The three-day sporting extravaganza was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha in the presence of internationally acclaimed gymnast Dipa Karmakar, sports officials, athletes, coaches and distinguished guests. The opening ceremony featured a colourful display of cultural performances showcasing Tripura’s rich heritage and traditions, adding a festive atmosphere to the historic occasion.

More than 3,000 athletes representing all eight districts of Tripura are participating in the inaugural edition of the State Games. Competitions are being held in 18 disciplines, including athletics, football, hockey, handball, volleyball, judo, table tennis, boxing, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, triathlon, squash, weightlifting, golf, kabaddi and kho-kho. Events are being conducted at multiple venues across the state from February 22 to 24.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Saha described the launch of the State Games as a milestone achievement for Tripura's sporting community. He said the initiative would provide a structured and competitive platform for identifying talented athletes from both urban and rural areas, enabling them to compete at higher levels and represent the state with distinction.

“Today is a historic day for Tripura. For the first time, we are witnessing athletes from every district coming together under one platform to showcase their talent and dedication. These games will help us identify promising sportspersons and prepare them for national and international competitions,” the Chief Minister said.

Dr. Saha emphasized that sports play a crucial role in youth development by promoting discipline, teamwork, perseverance and a healthy lifestyle. He noted that the state government has been consistently investing in sports infrastructure and training facilities to create better opportunities for young athletes.

The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to the Tripura Olympic Association for conceptualising and organising the event. He said the association’s efforts would contribute significantly to the growth of sports culture in the state and encourage greater participation among youth.

Celebrated gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who has brought international recognition to Tripura through her achievements, inspired participants by encouraging them to pursue excellence with determination and hard work. Her presence at the inaugural ceremony was a major attraction for young athletes aspiring to make a mark in their respective disciplines.

Organising Secretary Sujit Ray highlighted the importance of the State Games in building a strong sporting ecosystem and urged sports enthusiasts to attend the competitions and support the athletes. He said the event aims not only to identify talent but also to foster healthy competition and sportsmanship among participants.

Officials noted that the State Games have been designed as a comprehensive sporting platform that will serve as a talent-hunting mechanism for future state and national teams. The event is expected to create a pathway for athletes from remote and underrepresented areas to gain recognition and access better training opportunities.

The inaugural edition of the Tripura State Games also reflects the state's broader vision of using sports as a tool for social development and youth empowerment.
