Agartala, February 10: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday reviewed the progress of National Highway (NH) projects across the state, directing officials to ensure strict adherence to quality standards and timelines as part of efforts to transform Tripura into a major logistics and connectivity hub.
Chairing a high-level preparatory meeting at the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT) Conference Hall, the Chief Minister assessed ongoing works, identified bottlenecks, and discussed the future roadmap for highway development. The review comes at a crucial phase as Tripura undertakes a large-scale infrastructure overhaul to improve connectivity with the rest of the Northeast and neighbouring Bangladesh.
Addressing senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Dr. Saha issued a clear mandate that there would be no compromise on construction quality and no tolerance for delays. He emphasised the need for seamless coordination between state departments and central agencies to avoid procedural hurdles.
The Chief Minister underlined that national highways should be viewed not merely as transport corridors but as catalysts for accelerated development and a self-reliant Tripura.
Several key projects were reviewed during the meeting, including the NH-08 stretch from Udaipur to Sabroom, aimed at strengthening access to the strategic Sabroom gateway; the Agartala Western Bypass, intended to ease congestion in the capital; NH-208 between Khowai and Harina, to enhance internal connectivity in North Tripura; and the Agartala - Udaipur section, where elevation and drainage improvements are being undertaken to mitigate monsoon-related damage.

The review aligns with the state government’s broader vision of positioning Tripura as the “Gateway to South-East Asia,” leveraging improved road connectivity to boost trade, tourism, and regional integration. Recent budgetary support and central assistance have further highlighted the strategic importance of Tripura’s highway network.
“Our goal is to ensure that these infrastructure projects are completed on time and to the highest standards, so that the people of Tripura get the connectivity they deserve,” Dr. Saha said after the meeting.
The meeting concluded with directions for regular follow-up reviews to closely monitor both the physical and financial progress of all ongoing national highway projects in the state.
