Gangtok, February 9, 2026: A joint inspection was conducted on Monday in the Chandmari area of Gangtok to assess the worsening condition of the sinking zone, which has reportedly deteriorated further following the recent earthquake. The inspection was undertaken as part of the district administration's ongoing efforts to evaluate the extent of damage, address public safety concerns, and plan appropriate remedial measures for the affected locality.
The inspection team was led by MLA Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, accompanied by the local area councillor. Acting on the directions of the District Collector, Deputy Director Bijayta Kharel also participated in the field visit along with officials from the concerned departments.
During the inspection, the team surveyed several affected localities within the Chandmari sinking zone, where continued land subsidence has caused increasing concern among residents. Officials closely examined residential buildings that have sustained varying degrees of damage, ranging from minor wall cracks to severe structural distress. The recent earthquake is believed to have aggravated the already fragile condition of the area, intensifying fears over the safety of homes and infrastructure.
The inspection team interacted with residents to gain first-hand information about the problems they have been facing due to the ongoing ground movement. Many residents highlighted concerns over widening cracks in buildings, unstable foundations, and the potential risk of further subsidence. Officials documented the visible damage and assured the affected families that their grievances had been formally recorded for further evaluation.

Authorities informed residents that a detailed technical assessment would be carried out by experts to determine the extent of structural damage and identify suitable mitigation measures. Based on the findings, the administration will formulate an action plan in coordination with the concerned departments to reduce risks, protect vulnerable structures, and ensure the safety of the local population.
The joint inspection reflects the district administration's continued commitment to closely monitoring geologically vulnerable areas and responding proactively to emerging challenges. Officials emphasised that safeguarding lives and property remains a top priority, and necessary interventions will be undertaken following technical recommendations. The administration also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities as further assessments and preventive measures are carried out in the Chandmari sinking zone.
