Sikkim: Joint Inspection Held at Chandmari to Assess Damage in Sinking Zone

Gangtok, February 9, 2026: A joint inspection was carried out on Monday in the Chandmari area of Gangtok to assess the worsening condition of the sinking zone, which has reportedly deteriorated further following the recent earthquake.

The inspection was led by area MLA Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, accompanied by the local area councillor. Acting on the directions of the District Collector, Deputy Director Bijayta Kharel also took part in the visit.

During the inspection, the team surveyed affected localities and reviewed damage to residential structures caused by ongoing land subsidence, compounded by recent seismic activity. Officials observed that several houses in the area have sustained damage ranging from minor cracks to severe structural distress, raising serious safety concerns for residents.

Members of the inspection team interacted with local residents to understand ground-level issues and documented visible damage to buildings. Residents were assured that their concerns have been formally noted and that further action would be initiated after a detailed technical assessment to mitigate risks and ensure public safety.

The joint inspection highlights the administration’s continued commitment to closely monitor vulnerable zones and to initiate suitable remedial measures in coordination with concerned departments to prevent further damage and safeguard lives.
