In a statement issued by Yougan Tamang, Press Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, the incident was described as “deeply unfortunate and profoundly disturbing.” According to reports, what began as a trivial disagreement escalated into offensive and derogatory remarks targeting the women’s Northeastern identity, including comments questioning their character and dignity.
The statement termed such behaviour reprehensible and a direct violation of the constitutional principles of equality, dignity, and unity. It further noted that racial prejudice against people from the Northeast continues to persist in certain parts of the country.
The Sikkim government also expressed concern over reported remarks made during the altercation referencing ministers and Chief Ministers of Northeastern states, including Sikkim. Such comments, the statement said, are disrespectful to constitutional offices and reflect a troubling mindset that perpetuates discrimination.

Calling for a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation, the government urged authorities to take firm legal action against those responsible. It stressed that racial discrimination and gender-based abuse must not be tolerated anywhere in India.
The statement also appealed to citizens nationwide to reject prejudice in all forms and to safeguard the safety, dignity, and rights of students and working professionals from the Northeast.
Reaffirming solidarity with the aggrieved women, the Government of Sikkim and its people reiterated their commitment to equality, mutual respect, and national unity, stating that “an insult to the dignity of one Indian is an insult to the dignity of all.”
