The protest was organised in response to what the JAC described as continued inaction by the government and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) regarding deteriorating road conditions in Kolasib district. The poor state of National Highways 306 and 06, as well as internal roads within Kolasib town, has reportedly affected daily life, transportation, and public safety.
Earlier, the JAC had announced its plan to stage a protest at the NHIDCL office in Kolasib on February 16. Protesters attempted to proceed towards the office, leading to a confrontation with police personnel. The JAC termed the demonstration a “first and final warning,” stating that if necessary repairs are not completed within the mutually agreed timeframe discussed with NHIDCL officials, further action may follow in the larger public interest.
Meanwhile, Kolasib MLA and Deputy Speaker of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, Pu Lalfamkima, had yesterday convened a meeting at his residence with Kolasib Deputy Commissioner Pu Robert C Lalhmangaiha, SP Pu Lalrinpuia Varte, the SDO (S), Additional SP, and NHIDCL General Manager Pu Binod Kumar Shrivastava.
During the meeting, the progress of ongoing construction works on National Highways 306 and 06 within Kolasib district was reviewed in detail. District officials urged NHIDCL to expedite the work and ensure stricter monitoring.

The NHIDCL General Manager presented a report on the work plan and progress undertaken by NHIDCL and its contractors. Referring to an affidavit submitted before the Gauhati High Court, he stated that all road works under their jurisdiction are targeted for completion by April 30, 2026.
Deputy Speaker Pu Lalfamkima emphasised that government officials, NGOs, and civil society organisations in Kolasib are united in their desire for improved road infrastructure at the earliest. He expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the district administration and volunteers, and called for continued coordination to ensure timely completion of the projects.
The MLA further urged the NHIDCL General Manager to ensure that both the corporation and its contractors strictly adhere to the High Court deadline of April 30, 2026, and to carry out the work without creating further inconvenience to the public.
