Gangtok, February 20: In a move aimed at strengthening cultural ties and expanding opportunities in the film industry, a delegation of film producers and directors from Nepal met the Chairperson of the Information & Public Relations (IPR) Department, Ashit Rai, at his chamber in Soochna Bhawan, Gangtok, on Friday. The meeting focused on exploring avenues for collaboration between Sikkim and Nepal in film production, cultural exchange, and the promotion of the state's growing film ecosystem.

The interaction was attended by Tashi Tshering Bhutia, Chairperson of the Sikkim Film Production Board; Shekhar Sewa, Chairperson of the Sikkim Scheduled Caste Welfare Board; and Dr Manoj Rai, Vice President of the SKM Culture Wing. The discussions brought together representatives from the film fraternity and public institutions to deliberate on initiatives that could strengthen cross-border cooperation in the creative sector.
During the meeting, participants exchanged ideas on promoting Sikkim as a preferred destination for film production by showcasing its breathtaking natural landscapes, diverse cultural heritage, and supportive administrative environment. They discussed the state's potential to host domestic as well as international film projects, highlighting the availability of scenic locations ranging from snow-capped mountains and forests to monasteries, rivers, and traditional villages.
The delegation and state officials also deliberated on measures to improve institutional cooperation, simplify filming procedures, and facilitate easier access for production houses interested in shooting in Sikkim. Special emphasis was placed on creating opportunities for local artists, actors, technicians, and other film professionals through collaborative productions and skill-sharing initiatives.

The meeting further explored the possibility of strengthening cultural exchanges between Sikkim and Nepal through cinema, recognising films as an effective medium for promoting shared heritage, tourism, and people-to-people connections. Participants expressed confidence that closer collaboration would benefit filmmakers from both regions while opening new avenues for creative partnerships.
The meeting was also attended by noted writer Gautam Tiwaree Suryabangshi, social worker Yam Bdr Tiwaree, and members of the SKM Cultural Wing, who shared their views on promoting Sikkim's cultural identity through films and other creative platforms.
The interaction concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to fostering long-term partnerships that would enhance film production, encourage cultural exchange, and strengthen Sikkim's position as an emerging hub for cinema in the Himalayan region. Organisers expressed hope that the discussions would pave the way for future joint film projects, festivals, and collaborations benefiting artists and audiences in both Sikkim and Nepal.
