Nagaland: Shamator Administration Targets 3,000 Skilled Workers

Shamator, February 19: In a significant move aimed at strengthening the district’s workforce and preparing for future development opportunities, the District Administration of Shamator has set an ambitious target of creating a pool of 3,000 skilled workers. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance local employment prospects, reduce dependence on outside labour, and build a stronger foundation for economic growth in the district.

The target was announced by Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Shamator, Mekato J. Aye, while addressing the valedictory programme of a one-month skill development training conducted for 200 trainees. The programme, held on February 19, was organised in collaboration with AISTEC and Rhümoru Society, and focused on imparting practical skills in masonry, plumbing, tiling, and electrical trades.

A total of 200 participants successfully completed the training, including 50 women trainees, reflecting growing efforts to promote inclusive participation in skill development and employment generation initiatives. The programme sought to equip participants with marketable skills that would enable them to secure employment opportunities or pursue self-employment in various sectors.

Congratulating the trainees on successfully completing the course, Aye emphasised that skill development is a key component of the district administration’s vision for long-term economic progress. He encouraged the newly trained workers to view their certification not merely as an achievement but as a stepping stone towards professional growth and financial independence.

The EAC highlighted the importance of understanding how money circulates within the local economy and urged the trainees to contribute actively to economic activities in Shamator. According to him, the development of a skilled workforce can help retain economic resources within the district, create employment opportunities, and reduce the need for importing skilled labour from outside.

“Building a strong pool of skilled workers is essential for the future development of Shamator. As infrastructure projects and other developmental activities increase, it is important that local youth are equipped with the skills needed to participate and benefit from these opportunities,” he said.

Aye further stressed that the training programme was not simply about distributing machinery or providing short-term assistance. Instead, it was designed to empower participants to become competent and certified professionals capable of applying practical knowledge, technical expertise, and thoughtful planning in their chosen trades.

He encouraged the graduates to continue upgrading their skills and to maintain professional networks that could help them access work opportunities and collaborate with others in the field. The EAC also called upon the trainees to become ambassadors for skill development within their communities by motivating other young people and parents to take advantage of similar programmes.

The district administration's goal of creating 3,000 skilled workers reflects a broader effort to prepare the local population for emerging opportunities linked to infrastructure development, housing projects, and other economic activities in the region. Officials believe that a larger skilled workforce will not only improve employability but also support entrepreneurship and small-scale business development.

As part of the valedictory programme, trainees were provided with basic toolkits to assist them in beginning their professional journeys. The distribution of tools was intended to help graduates apply their newly acquired skills immediately and increase their chances of securing work in their respective trades.

The initiative has been welcomed as a positive step toward empowering local youth and strengthening human resource development in Shamator. By investing in vocational training and practical skills, the district administration hopes to build a self-reliant workforce capable of contributing meaningfully to the district’s growth and to the broader economic development of Nagaland.

Officials expressed confidence that with sustained training efforts and community participation, Shamator can emerge as a model district for skill-based development and workforce empowerment in the years ahead.
