Imphal, February 21: The Government of Manipur has declared a three-day State Mourning as a mark of respect to Late Vungzagin Valte, MLA of 56–Thanlon Assembly Constituency, who passed away on February 20, 2026, after a prolonged period of medical treatment.
According to an official order issued by the General Administration Department (Records & Library Section) on February 21, the State Mourning will be observed from February 22 to February 24, 2026. During the mourning period, the National Flag will be flown at Half Mast on all government buildings throughout the state in accordance with established protocol. The government has also directed that no official entertainment programmes be held during the three-day period as a mark of respect for the departed legislator.
The notification was issued in the name of the Governor of Manipur and signed by Thokchom Bedajit, Deputy Secretary, General Administration Department.
Vungzagin Valte, a senior political leader from Manipur's hill districts, represented the Thanlon Assembly Constituency and was widely respected for his commitment to public service. A three-time legislator, he consistently raised issues concerning the welfare and development of the hill areas and tribal communities in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. His dedication to his constituents earned him recognition across political and community lines.

Valte had been undergoing treatment since sustaining critical injuries in a mob attack during the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur in May 2023. Despite prolonged medical care at hospitals in New Delhi and Gurugram, he succumbed to his injuries on February 20.
His demise has triggered an outpouring of grief across the state, with political leaders, civil society organisations, and community groups paying tribute to his life and legacy. Condolence messages have poured in from national and regional leaders, who remembered him as a sincere, courageous, and dedicated public representative.
Further details regarding the funeral arrangements and the final rites are expected to be announced by the bereaved family in the coming days.
