Manipur Congress President Criticises Union Budget, Seeks Special Crisis Package for State

Imphal, February 3, 2026: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Keisham Meghachandra on Tuesday said the state requires urgency, political sensitivity and bold intervention to address the prevailing crisis, criticising the Union Budget 2026–27 for its lack of focus on Manipur.

Speaking to reporters on the Union Budget 2026–27, Meghachandra said that “while the budget may be big in numbers, for Manipur it is painfully small in intent.” He added that at a time when the state is grappling with displacement, economic disruption and deep social distress, the people had expected decisive national support.

The Wangkhem constituency legislator said there was no announcement of a special package, reconstruction mission or employment roadmap for Manipur, despite the gravity of the situation on the ground. “There has been no special package, no reconstruction mission, no employment roadmap and nothing that reflects the seriousness of the crisis,” he said.

Clarifying his position, Meghachandra remarked that continuing routine schemes for the Northeast cannot be termed special attention. “Manipur needed urgency, political sensitivity and bold intervention. What we received instead is mere administrative continuity,” he said.

Raising concerns over inclusive growth, he questioned whether the country could truly speak of national development while ignoring a state in urgent need of healing and rebuilding. He stressed that Manipur is not seeking charity but demanding responsibility from the Union Government.

“A nation that aspires to become a global power cannot afford to neglect a border state that is vital to its unity and security,” Meghachandra said. He urged the Union Government to immediately correct the omission by announcing a Special Crisis Package, accelerating rehabilitation, rebuilding damaged infrastructure and restoring livelihoods across the state.
