Imphal, February 8: Chief Minister of Manipur Shri Yumnam Khemchand including Senior political leaders, today saw off Hon’ble MLA of Thanlon Assembly Constituency, Shri Vungzagin Valte, as he departed for New Delhi on a chartered ambulance flight for further medical treatment.
Shri Valte, a three-time legislator representing Thanlon in the Pherzawl district, has been undergoing long-term medical care following a brutal mob attack in Imphal in May 2023, when ethnic violence erupted across the state. He was critically injured during the assault, air-lifted to Delhi on a state-arranged air ambulance and spent nearly two years in intensive treatment, including prolonged time on life support at Apollo Hospital. The attack left him with serious physical impairments and ongoing health challenges, and he has since required continuous rehabilitation and specialised care in the national capital.
During the farewell at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, the Manipur Chief Minister was among those who extended their best wishes to Shri Valte, highlighting a rare moment of cross-community solidarity in the midst of ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur.
Also present on the occasion were Hon’ble MLAs Shri Premchandra and Shri T. Robindro, who joined in offering prayers for the lawmaker’s swift recovery and safe return to active public service. Political aides noted that the flight was organised to ensure Valte’s medical needs are met promptly at a specialised facility in the national capital.

In a statement, Mr. Yumnam Khemchand - present at the airport - said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shri Vungzagin Valte and his family during this difficult time. We sincerely pray for his early recovery and return to service in the interest of the people.”
Valte’s ordeal began when violence broke out in Manipur in May 2023. After a meeting with the Chief Minister on peace efforts, the lawmaker’s convoy was intercepted by a mob near RIMS Road in Imphal West, leaving him grievously injured. His condition prompted urgent evacuation to Delhi for advanced medical care.
Since then, Valte has periodically returned to public life, making appeals for peace and unity between communities and calling for continued dialogue across divides.
