The event was chaired by Pi Zuiliani Hrahsel, Joint Director (IEC), MSACS, while Mizoram Health and Family Welfare Minister Pi Lalrinpuii attended as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, the Health Minister expressed concern over the rising rate of HIV transmission through sexual contact in Mizoram, describing it as a serious social and public health issue.
She noted that while India’s overall HIV prevalence rate stands at 0.2 percent, Mizoram’s prevalence rate is significantly higher at 2.74 percent, calling the figure alarming and urging collective efforts to address the situation. Citing the World Health Organization’s position that condoms are among the simplest and most effective methods of preventing HIV and sexually transmitted infections, she stressed the need to discard misconceptions and stigma surrounding condom use.
The Minister also spoke about the importance of faithfulness between partners and urged young people to avoid premarital sex. She encouraged those who are sexually active to use condoms without hesitation to prevent the spread of HIV. Highlighting that nearly 70 percent of HIV transmissions in Mizoram are attributed to sexual contact, she emphasized the crucial role of youth in safeguarding the state’s future and reiterated the campaign message, “Just use it.”
During the programme, the Health Minister formally launched the Love Brigade 2.0 Campaign. Under the initiative, Love Brigade Condom Jackets were distributed to two-wheeler taxi drivers to enable easy access to condoms for passengers and others in need.
