Agartala, February 1: The Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (GMP), the indigenous wing of the Left Front, has announced that it will contest all 28 seats in the forthcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), identifying the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its principal political opponent and Tipra Motha as a secondary challenger.
The announcement was made on Saturday at a press conference held at the CPI(M) state headquarters in Agartala by newly re-elected GMP General Secretary Radha Charan Debbarma. He alleged that the BJP-led state government has curtailed the limited autonomy previously enjoyed by the ADC during the Left Front’s tenure, pushing the council into a severe financial crisis by denying funds.
Debbarma also accused the Tipra Motha-led ADC administration of failing to check irregularities, alleging widespread corruption and misuse of ADC land through leasing or transfer to private parties. He claimed that several development initiatives launched during the Left Front regime were being systematically weakened.
Stating that the Left Front has adopted a 10-point charter of demands, Debbarma said the party would launch a series of agitations to press for their implementation. He added that people living in ADC areas have begun protesting against what he described as the “misleading politics” of both the BJP and Tipra Motha, expressing confidence that the Left Front would perform strongly in the upcoming polls.
GMP President Naresh Jamatia, who was also present at the press conference, accused Tipra Motha of maintaining links with surrendered militant elements and criticised the state government for failing to provide adequate financial support to the ADC. He further alleged poor monitoring of the council’s functioning, stating that senior ministers and officials rarely visit the ADC headquarters at Khumulwng.
The press meet followed the conclusion of the two-day 23rd Central Conference of the GMP, held at the Agartala Town Hall on January 29–30, during which new organisational bodies were formed. Naresh Jamatia was re-elected as president, while Radha Charan Debbarma and Pranab Debbarma were elected as assistant general secretaries.
Party leaders said a 25-member executive committee was constituted with the inclusion of six new members, along with a restructured 139-member state committee. Reiterating its poll strategy, the GMP said it is prepared for an “inch-by-inch” political contest in the ADC elections, with the BJP as its main adversary and Tipra Motha as a secondary challenger.
