Agartala, January 31, 2026: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Saturday inaugurated newly constructed all-weather cricket practice grounds at Belonia, Jirania and Kailashahar, marking a major boost to sports infrastructure and grassroots cricket development in the state. The facilities have been developed as part of the Tripura Cricket Association’s (TCA) efforts to expand access to quality training facilities and identify emerging talent from rural and semi-urban areas.
The inauguration of the practice grounds reflects the state government's growing emphasis on sports development and youth empowerment through improved infrastructure and training opportunities. Officials said the facilities are designed to provide aspiring cricketers with modern practice environments that can be used throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.
Addressing the programme, Chief Minister Dr. Saha said the initiative would help bridge the gap between urban and rural sporting facilities and create equal opportunities for talented young players from all parts of Tripura.
“This is an important milestone in our effort to spread cricket beyond urban areas and develop talent at the grassroots level. These practice grounds will be a valuable resource for the youth of Tripura to sharpen their skills and reach their full potential,” the Chief Minister said.
Dr. Saha noted that cricket has witnessed remarkable growth in Tripura over the past several years, with increasing participation from young athletes and steady improvements in sports infrastructure. He said the development of all-weather practice facilities in rural regions would further strengthen the state's cricket ecosystem and help identify promising players at an early stage.
According to the Chief Minister, sports play a crucial role in shaping the character of young people by promoting discipline, teamwork, dedication and healthy competition. He emphasized that investments in sports infrastructure are investments in the future of the state's youth and contribute to overall social development.
The newly inaugurated facilities are expected to benefit hundreds of aspiring cricketers by providing them with access to professional-standard practice environments. Officials said the grounds will support coaching programmes, talent scouting initiatives and regular training sessions organized by the Tripura Cricket Association.
The Chief Minister praised the efforts of the TCA in expanding cricket infrastructure beyond major urban centres and reaching remote areas where talented players often lack access to adequate training facilities. He said the association's vision aligns with the government's objective of promoting sports at the grassroots level and ensuring that no talented athlete is left behind due to geographical or infrastructural limitations.

Sports administrators noted that the construction of all-weather practice grounds is particularly important in a region that experiences significant rainfall during parts of the year. The facilities will allow uninterrupted training schedules, helping players maintain consistency in their preparation and development.
Officials also expressed hope that the improved infrastructure would contribute to better performances by Tripura's cricket teams at regional and national levels. With access to enhanced training facilities, young players will have greater opportunities to develop the technical and physical skills required to compete at higher levels of the sport.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure across Tripura. In recent years, the state has invested in stadiums, training centres and sporting facilities aimed at encouraging participation in various disciplines and creating pathways for talented athletes to excel.
Dr. Saha said that sports can serve as a powerful tool for youth development and social transformation. He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting athletes, coaches and sporting organizations through infrastructure development and policy initiatives.
The inauguration of the all-weather cricket practice grounds at Belonia, Jirania and Kailashahar is expected to have a lasting impact on Tripura's cricketing landscape. By bringing modern facilities closer to rural communities, the project aims to nurture local talent, promote wider participation in sports and strengthen the foundation for the next generation of cricketers from the state.
Officials believe the initiative will not only enhance sporting opportunities for youth but also help position Tripura as an emerging centre for cricket development in the Northeast, attracting greater attention to the state's growing potential in the sport.
