SOSA Kurtot Harvesting Festival Concludes at Lum, Lower Dzongu

Mangan, January 19: The SOSA Kurtot Harvesting Festival, organised by the SOSA Kurtot Celebration Committee (SKCC), concluded today at Lum, celebrating the rich agricultural and cultural traditions of the Lepcha community.

The concluding programme was graced by Palden Gyurmed Namgyal, Prince of Sikkim, as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Hope Leezum Namgyal Tobden, Princess of Sikkim. The event commenced with traditional ritual prayers, followed by a welcome address delivered by SOSA President Sonam Tshering Lepcha.

Addressing the gathering, Prince Palden Gyurmed Namgyal highlighted the importance of such festivals in preserving indigenous culture and inspiring the younger generation to remain connected with their roots. Emphasising the cultural significance of Dzongu, he remarked that while Mayal Yang symbolises the body, Dzongu represents the heart, noting that the region has successfully safeguarded the rich heritage of the Lepcha community.

He also informed the gathering about the completion of the documentary “The Oath”, stating that its trailer has already been unveiled, adding to ongoing efforts to document and preserve Lepcha history and traditions.

The programme featured traditional sports events followed by colourful cultural performances showcasing the vibrant customs and traditions of the region. The festival concluded with a vote of thanks by Gidon Lepcha, SDM Dzongu-cum-Chief Patron of SOSA Kurtot.

Among others present on the occasion were Ugen Tshering Lepcha, OSD (Land & Revenue), and Tashi Thendup Lepcha, OSD (Food & Civil Supply).
