Sikkim Attends 2nd Conference of Fisheries Secretaries in New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 17: The State of Sikkim participated in the 2nd Conference of Fisheries Secretaries, held on January 16, 2026, at the NASC Complex. The Sikkim delegation was led by Roshni Rai, Secretary, Fisheries Department, Government of Sikkim, accompanied by Rochak Subba, Deputy Director, and Surendra Bhandari, Assistant Director-cum-State Nodal Officer, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

The conference was organised by the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, in collaboration with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB). Fisheries Secretaries and senior officials from various States and Union Territories participated in the deliberations, which focused on reviewing sectoral progress, implementation of flagship schemes including PMMSY, timely release of funds, value addition, sustainable fisheries practices, and sharing of best practices across the country.

During the state-wise review, Secretary Roshni Rai highlighted the status of PMMSY implementation in Sikkim, informing the forum that all ongoing projects under the scheme in the state are progressing satisfactorily. She stated that the projects are expected to be completed within the current financial year, with no spillover liabilities proposed for the next financial year. She reiterated Sikkim’s commitment to efficient planning, timely execution, and prudent financial management in implementing fisheries development programmes.

Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India, appreciated the efforts of the Sikkim Government in the effective implementation of fisheries initiatives. He advised the state to take proactive steps towards promoting Organic Fisheries Clusters, citing Sikkim’s ecological advantages and its status as India’s first fully organic state.

The conference provided valuable insights and strategic direction aimed at strengthening sustainable and inclusive growth of the fisheries sector across States and Union Territories, with an emphasis on innovation, ecological balance, and livelihood enhancement.
