Congress Working President Deborah Marak on Tuesday said that as the head of the state government, it was the chief minister’s responsibility to be present and take the salute on Republic Day. She pointed out that Sangma was absent from the celebrations in both the Khasi Hills and Garo Hills regions.

Criticising the chief minister’s conduct, Marak alleged that his absence from such an important national occasion reflected a disregard for the significance of Republic Day and for the people of the state. Seeking clarity on his whereabouts, she said that the chief minister, by virtue of his office, was duty-bound to lead the state during official function.

Meanwhile, official ceremonies went ahead under other constitutional authorities. CH Vijayashankar, Governor of Meghalaya, took the salute at the Republic Day celebration in the state capital, while Thomas Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, presided over the ceremony in Tura.

Adding to the speculation, the chief minister did not post any updates or clarifications on his social media platforms regarding his participation in the Republic Day festivities.

The Congress has demanded an explanation from the chief minister, stating that transparency and accountability are essential, particularly on occasions of national importance.
