The programme was led by Mekato J. Aye, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), Shamator, in collaboration with the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO), Tuensang, and the Police Department, Shamator. Conducted under the theme, “Let the New Year Begin with Road Safety, Kindness and Responsibility,” the initiative sought to encourage greater awareness and compliance with road safety norms among motorists and the general public.
Unlike conventional awareness programmes conducted indoors, the campaign adopted a street-level approach to facilitate direct interaction with road users. Officials and volunteers engaged with drivers, two-wheeler riders and pedestrians at various locations across Shamator town, creating opportunities for practical awareness and public participation.
A major highlight of the programme was the distribution of free helmets to two-wheeler riders. The initiative was undertaken to encourage the consistent use of protective gear and reinforce the importance of helmet use in preventing serious injuries and fatalities during road accidents. Officials emphasized that wearing helmets remains one of the most effective measures for ensuring rider safety.
In addition, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials were distributed among the public. These materials provided information on traffic regulations, safe driving practices, responsible road behaviour and the importance of respecting traffic rules. Banners and flex displays carrying road safety messages were also installed at prominent locations throughout the town to maximize public awareness.
As part of the sensitisation drive, motorists were educated on the need to carry safety kits, observe speed limits, avoid reckless driving and cooperate with fellow road users to create a safer road environment.
Addressing participants during the programme, EAC Mekato J. Aye noted that with improving road infrastructure and a steadily growing population in Shamator, road safety has become an increasingly important concern. He stressed that awareness campaigns would be conducted regularly and should be viewed as a continuous effort rather than a one-time activity.
The programme concluded with a call for collective responsibility among all road users. Organisers expressed hope that the initiative would help foster a culture of safety, discipline and mutual respect on the roads, ultimately contributing to fewer accidents and safer communities across the district.
