According to a notification issued by the District Council and Minority Affairs Department, Mizoram on Monday, the Governor had assumed all functions and powers of the CADC on July 7, 2025, initially for six months. With the expiry of that term on January 7, 2026, the Governor has now ordered the extension of Governor’s Rule for another six months.
The notification noted that Lakkhan Chakma had claimed leadership of the CADC following the completion of the first six-month period. In response, the Governor sought the opinion of the Council of Ministers, headed by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
The Council of Ministers reportedly opined that there was no justification for continuing Governor’s Rule, stating that the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) enjoyed a clear majority and was capable of forming a stable administration in the council.
However, Governor Singh observed that frequent shifts in political allegiance by elected members of the CADC had created an unstable political environment. He said this volatility necessitated the continuation of Governor’s Rule to ensure smooth administration and prevent further uncertainty in the autonomous council.
The extension underscores the ongoing political fluidity within the CADC, even as the state government maintains that a democratically elected alternative is feasible.
