Imphal, Jan 15, 2026: The peace process between the Government of India (GoI) and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) continued to move forward with the first meeting of the Peace Monitoring Committee (PMC) for 2026 reportedly held in Imphal on January 13.

The high-level meeting was attended by A.K. Mishra, Advisor (Northeast) to the Ministry of Home Affairs, along with Rajesh Kamble, Joint Director of the Intelligence Bureau. Also present were Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh, and senior officials from the Assam Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF).
Four members of the UNLF’s Central Committee represented the outfit at the meeting. While no official details were released regarding the discussions, sources said the PMC reviewed the implementation of ground rules under the ongoing peace process.
The Peace Monitoring Committee was constituted following the peace agreement signed on November 29, 2023, in New Delhi between the GoI and the Pambei-led UNLF. The agreement, described by the MHA at the time as a “historic achievement,” was aimed at ensuring compliance with agreed ground rules and resolving issues arising during the peace process. The MHA had then stated that the accord would “usher in a new era of peace in the Northeast in general and Manipur in particular.”
Sources familiar with the developments indicated that the January 13 meeting may also have discussed the possible initiation of a formal political dialogue between the GoI and the Pambei-led UNLF, as well as the Centre’s ongoing efforts to facilitate the formation of a popular government in Manipur following a prolonged period of political uncertainty. However, no official confirmation has been issued on these aspects.
The Pambei-led UNLF remains under peace talks with the Centre, and political observers view the latest PMC meeting as a significant step in sustaining momentum in the dialogue process.
