Drug Awareness Programme Marking National Youth Day Held at Khliehriat Court

Khliehriat, Jan 15, 2026: A Drug Awareness-cum-Pledge Taking Programme was organised on Thursday at the premises of the District and Sessions Court, East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat, to mark National Youth Day 2026 and to promote a drug-free society.

The programme was conducted under NALSA’s DAWN Scheme 2025 by the District Legal Services Authority, East Jaintia Hills District (DLSA), under the aegis of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), with the theme “Ghar Ghar Mein Nyay Ki Jagriti”. The initiative aimed to sensitise youth and the general public about the legal, social and health consequences of drug abuse, while fostering collective responsibility to combat the growing menace.

The event was attended by R. Manar, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, DLSA East Jaintia Hills; Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsels K. Challam and P. Paswet, along with other Legal Aid Defence Counsels, panel lawyers, advocates, court staff and key stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, Smti. R. Manar highlighted the rising concern of substance abuse among youth and explained the legal provisions relating to drug offences, preventive strategies and rehabilitation mechanisms. She emphasised the importance of legal awareness, family support and community participation in preventing addiction, and informed participants about the support services available through legal services institutions.

The programme concluded with a pledge-taking ceremony led by Smti. K. Challam, during which participants pledged to stay away from drugs and actively spread awareness within their communities. The initiative reaffirmed the commitment of legal services authorities to empower citizens through legal awareness and to work towards building a healthier, drug-free society, particularly among the youth.
