Guwahati, Jan 26: In a major boost to technical education and skill development in Upper Assam, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday attended the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for the proposed EdTech Skills University at Gelapukhuri in Tinsukia district. The project, announced on the occasion of Republic Day, is expected to become a premier institution for industry-oriented education and advanced skill training in the region.

The upcoming university will be developed with an estimated investment of around ₹200 crore and is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in emerging sectors. According to government officials, the institution will offer specialised programmes in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Hospitality Management, Food Processing, Bamboo Technology, and several other future-focused disciplines aligned with evolving industry requirements.
Spread across nearly 10 lakh square feet, the state-of-the-art campus will have the capacity to train up to 10,000 students at a time, making it one of the largest skill development institutions in Northeast India. The university aims to bridge the gap between academic education and industry needs by equipping students with practical, employment-oriented skills.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma said the EdTech Skills University would play a transformative role in preparing Assam's youth for the rapidly changing global job market. He emphasized that the institution would provide world-class education while promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological excellence.
Officials stated that the university would serve as a major centre for skill development in Upper Assam, supporting the state's broader vision of creating a highly skilled workforce capable of contributing to India's digital and industrial growth. The institution is also expected to collaborate with industries and technology partners to ensure that its curriculum remains relevant to current and future employment trends.
